Like father Jim, David too was an avid football fan and a keen player in Sunday leagues through his youth. When marriage curtailed such fun he had to resort to the annual Boxing Day family tournament that became a ritual part of Christmas celebrations, at least until age and good grace finally took their toll.

David married Angela Wainwright on 26 March 1967 at St George's Church, Stamford. They have one daughter:
Joanna Louise, born 16 May 1974 in Oakham, Leicestershire
