Louise, 1878

'Dearie' as she was affectionately known on the streets of Lincoln, was born in Horncastle in 1878.  She devoted her life to Christ and the work of the Salvation Army and remained unmarried to the end of her life.

Living in Ashton's Court close by the Salvation Army Citadel, she became both well-known and highly respected in the city for her unceasing fund-raising activities and commitment to the Army.

On 10th June 1957 Dearie was knocked down by a motor-cycle at the junction of Alfred Street and High Street ridden by one Clive Moore of Browning Drive, Lincoln.

She suffered a fractured hip and died in Lincoln County Hospital on 2nd September 1957, aged 79.  Her funeral was accompanied by full Salvation Army honours with the procession being escorted through the streets of Lincoln by the Citadel Army Band to her final resting place in Eastgate Cemetery, alongside her parents, Edward and Georgina.  Contemporaries say the city stood still for Dearie as she passed for the last time.

Even now in 2003, there are people who fondly remember Dearie and the work she did for 'the Sally Army'.
